When it comes to family vacations, we like to take things slow; spending a lot of time together playing games, enjoying nature and turning off the electronics. This is our second time staying in a wonderful 300-year-old farmhouse and enjoying our time together on the perfect family holiday during the summer in Switzerland. We spent 2 months traveling around and staying in different areas. This particular itinerary is just 10 days of those 2 months.
Summer in Switzerland is the perfect family holiday because it allowed us to unplug and spend some much needed quiet family time outdoors. This first day started at Valle Verzasca where we spent the morning rock jumping and swimming. It was one of the most beautiful rivers I have ever seen. Next, we drove 2 hours north to Morgarten and checked in to The Farmhouse.
This beautiful house is secluded on the Morgarten mountain, with grazing cows nearby and the beautiful alpine mountains on the horizon.
With a 20 minute hike you can reach the Morgarten summit which gives you a spectacular view of Agerisee Lake. Rothenthurm is the nearest community with amenities and only 7-10 min away by car. We grabbed groceries there so we could eat at home or go on picnics while hiking. The first day we hiked through areas of Morgarten.
Day 2: Rothenthurm
This day was a perfectly quiet day. We started it out with a morning run. Visiting Switzerland in the summer provides a lot of opportunities for kids to get out and explore. We hiked around Rothenthurm and explored the small village with the kids and had a picnic. You can get fresh food at the bakery and deli. We loved the fresh bread and meats on our hiking picnics.
This day was our hiking day! Dad hiked Grosser Mythen with the bigger kids and Mom hiked Morgarten Trail with the littlies. We were outside all day enjoying the fresh air and getting to know the local cows. We had picnics for both lunch and dinner.
Day 4: Lucerne
We drove to Lucerne to the Swiss Museum of Transport which was a 45 min drive from our accommodations. Lucerne is a beautiful city with amazing architecture, museums and castles, cathedrals and outdoor spaces for exploring. For this particular stay in Switzerland, we opted to buy the annual pass to the museum because the kids enjoyed it so much (we went 4 times in 2 months). This is a great way to diversify the days for the kids while saving money.
No family holiday in Switzerland is complete without a “time out” day. After a few days of outdoor time and walking, the kids were ready for some relaxing. We chose to stay close to The Farmhouse reading books, eating fresh food from Rothenthurm, and playing board games together. And because we love being outside so much, we talked the kids into squeezing in a short hike in the hills around the house.
It was the perfect day.
Day 6: Brunnen
This day we drove to Brunnen to see the lake and walk around the town. This is a quick 20-minute drive by car. Close to the lake in Brunnen there is the Victorinox store where we made Swiss Army pocket knives with the kids (registration required). There is also a fun toy store up the street and a classic gelato shop. We had a great day playing in the beautiful park Auslandschweizer Platz on the lake with miniature golf and a playground.
Day 7: Goldau
We spent this entire day in Natur- und Tierpark (Nature Reserve and Wildlife Park) in Goldau. It was a day full of lots of walking, but we experienced beautiful surroundings, some animal sightings, and picnics together.
Since this day was a Sunday we attended church in Zurich and enjoyed the quiet of The Farmhouse and surrounding hills.
This was our last chance to hike this area, so after an easy morning of book reading and feeding the cows, we walked back up Morgarten mountain to enjoy the last moments of the summit splendour.
We spent our final day at Agerisee Lake enjoying swimming and running around. We had the perfect family holiday that made Switzerland a breath of fresh air for our entire family. There was so much time to unplug, be together and enjoy the great outdoors. It was our second time to this particular place and it won’t be our last. We love it!
